When I was a child society led me to believe that I did not possess athletic abilities that a boy, according to social-cultural norms, should. So I didn’t play team sports thinking that my feed would not kick correctly or my hands would not pitch the ball with manly vigor. My school days were spent trying to move as little as possible, lest I give away my gayness. Eventually I found yoga and in this practice discovered that my queer identity was nothing to be ashamed of AND that I did, indeed, have a dynamic athleticism. Yoga, of course is more than a work out. It’s a training in building our mind’s capacity to focus, to sustain concentration, and in so doing, find our way into oneness with the universe. I explore this seem of finding oneness through the meditative work of collage. The form I choose most often is that of a circle, a shape with no beginning or end. The fragments of paper come together to create a whole in the same way that we can do the soul work to align our various aspects (parts) together into our full authentic self.
